Liver Cancer Awareness Month

October, as well as being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is also the month we raise awareness about liver cancer.

Liver cancer in children shows up as Hepatoblastoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, undifferentiated embryonal srcoma of the liver, and infantile choriocarcinoma of the liver.

Hepatoblastoma is the most common liver cancer in children. This cancer is when malignant cancer cells from in the liver tissue. This cancer is usually seen in children under the age of three.

Signs and symptoms of Hepatoblastoma usually happen once the tumour has grown large. Symptoms can include things like a lump or swelling in the abdomen that might be painful, weight-loss for an unknown reason, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

If the original tumour is found when it is still small and can be completely removed with surgery, then prognosis is good. There is about an 85% survival rate if the tumour can be fully resected and hasn't spread.

Promising new research out of University of California San Francisco, is discovering new details about Hepatoblastoma and how to make chemotherapy treatments for it more precises. For more information, check out the study.
